Ghost town of Granite, Oregon Oregon Geographic Names allows a bit of disagreement about the origin (and possibly original location) of Granite. Initially, the town was called “Independance” because of the date that gold was discovered. The city had a population of 45 in 1930, 86 in 1940, 40 in 1950, and two in 1960. Tabor, who had staked the first mining claim on Granite Creek (the Independence) and was the only merchant in town at the time, served as the first postmaster.

Granite is still inhabited with a population of 38 as of the 2010 census (source: Services in Granite include the Granite Outback (general store and gasoline) and The Lodge at Granite.Howard Brooks notes, “Gold was discovered on Granite Creek on Independance Day, July 4, 1862, by a group of of prospectors from California on their way up to gold camps in Idaho.”  This finding led to other groups to joining in, and a settlement was established ½ mile west of the current site of Granite. It says that Albert G. Tabor discovered gold along Granite Creek on July 4th, 1862 and named his claim Independence to commemorate the date. Of course, in 1970, Granite's population was 1. Although electrical service, provided by a local power plant on Clear Creek, and telegraph and later telephone lines were operational in the early days, they fell out of use and were abandoned after World War II.

First established by miners after the discovery of gold July 4, 1862, the community was originally called Independence and was situated about a mile-and-half west-north-west of the present location. It is especially convenient to come across a place to park, and many properties for sale are a very short car ride from the nearest highway. The area saw a great boom starting in 1899 which was instrumental in the town finally being incorporated after decades as a small camp.
