MERRIAM, Kan. — While construction crews tore down the Irene B. French Community Center off of Merriam Drive, they found a time capsule hidden inside. Not wanting to disappoint people 100 years from now when they find it, they put in many more artifacts so people in 2120 can better see what life was like for us today. Summer memberships will not be available, although monthly members can set an expiration date when signing up.
City officials decided to put their own time capsule in the cornerstone of the new community center. The pool perimeter fence has been completed so on this very warm day water is going into the pool!

The Merriam city staff Monday evening informed the city council it’s expecting a three-week delay in opening the new community … City staff believes this may coincide with the opening of the community center as a whole, but there is a chance it might not. The time capsule had a written roll call of the first kids to attend the school, and a book on laws for common schools in Kansas published in 1909. The outdoor pool at the new Merriam Community Center will open when the Ad Astra Reopening Plan enters the phase out portion, or no sooner than June 22.
