I’m Tiffany and I have begun my Academic year-long study abroad trip to Nagoya, Japan at the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies.Due to wifi issues, I wasn’t able to write about my first 2 days, so I’ll do a two-part Introductory Series to the university and the district of Nisshin within the city of Nagoya.The university, abbreviated as NUFS was founded in 1988 originally as a foreign studies focused university, but expanded to include global business and economics later on.For foreign exchange students, NUFS operates an exchange program within their JLI (Japanese Learning Instituite) department open to all students around the world.NUFS puts exchange students in two dorms: The International House, and Proxy Friends Nisshin.I personally was put into Proxy Friends Nisshin, a single-building apartment complex 8 stories high, with a semi-underground small parking lot/bike lot.The building is about a 10 minute walk from campus (feels like hours in the hot and muggy summer air) and very safe at all hours, with a security guard/caretaker in the morning and afternoon, and locked key-access only doors for all entrances and exits in the building.Each floor has an RA, so you’re never going to flounder about without assistance if you need it as well. Our office administers the International Study Travel Grant for students travelling on approved UCalgary study programs that are credit bearing. Each June, Nagoya hosts its annual university festival, Nagoya also offers a wide range of clubs, with over 53 cultural clubs and 43 sports clubs, with a total membership of 3,500 students. The climate in Nagoya, although generally mild, is distinguished by its humidity and marked seasonal changes.
